Intermetatarsal bursitis
Intermetatarsal bursitis refers to the inflammation of the bursae located between the metatarsal bones in the foot. Bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion as well as reduce friction between bones, tendons and muscles. In the foot, intermetatarsal bursae are situated between adjacent metatarsal heads (the bones in the middle part of the foot).
Causes of Intermetatarsal Bursitis:
- Repetitive Stress: Activities that involve repeated pressure or stress on the forefoot, such as running, dancing or wearing high heels can lead to irritation and inflammation of the bursae.
- Foot Deformities: Conditions like bunions, hammertoes or abnormalities in foot structure can alter the distribution of weight across the foot leading to increased pressure on the bursae.
- Injury or Trauma: Direct trauma to the forefoot or excessive pressure due to ill-fitting footwear can cause irritation and inflammation of the intermetatarsal bursae.
- Footwear Choices: Shoes that are too tight or narrow, especially in the toe box area, can compress the metatarsal heads and contribute to bursitis.
Symptoms of Intermetatarsal Bursitis:
- Pain: Typically felt at the base of the toes or in the ball of the foot. The pain may worsen with movement or pressure on the affected area.
- Swelling: Inflammation of the bursae can lead to visible swelling in the forefoot.
- Tenderness: The affected area may be tender to the touch.
- Redness or Warmth: In some cases, the skin overlying the inflamed bursa may appear red or feel warm to the touch.
