Onychomadesis
Onychomadesis is a condition characterized by the spontaneous shedding or loss of the nails. It usually starts at the distal portion (farthest from the nail bed) and progressing towards the proximal portion (closer to the nail bed).
Onychomadesis is usually a self-limiting condition, meaning that the nails will eventually grow back on their own once the underlying cause is addressed. The process of nail regrowth can take several months, depending on the rate of nail growth and the extent of the damage to the nail matrix.
Causes
Onychomadesis can occur as a result of various factors, including:
- Trauma or injury to the nail matrix (the tissue beneath the nail that produces new nail cells).
- Infections, such as hand-foot-and-mouth disease, chickenpox, or fungal infections.
- Systemic illnesses, including certain viral infections (such as Coxsackie virus), autoimmune diseases, and adverse drug reactions.
- Chemotherapy or radiation therapy, which can affect nail growth.
- Severe nutritional deficiencies, particularly of zinc or biotin.
Treatment of onychomadesis focuses on addressing the underlying cause and promoting healthy nail regrowth. This may involve discontinuing medications associated with nail shedding, treating underlying infections or systemic conditions and providing supportive care to protect the affected nails from further damage.
