Lower limb health and Edema

Lower limb health is essential for overall mobility, independence and quality of life.  The lower limbs, which include the hips, thighs, knees, calves, ankles and feet, play a vital role in movement, balance, and supporting the weight of the body.  Ensuring that these areas remain healthy is crucial to prevent injury, manage chronic conditions and promote function and strength.

There are many reasons for our legs swelling up.  Even certain medications can cause lower limb circulation issues.  Venous Insufficiency for example is just one cause which occurs from weak or damaged veins causing blood pooling in the legs.

How can we avoid odema and maintain healthy arterial, venous and lymphatic flow?

Simple steps such as:

  • reducing salt intake
  • broad toe box shoes and
  • staying hydrated.

In certain cases, elevating legs and compression socks can also be useful.  Staying as active as possible is key.

Symptoms of Lower Limb Edema

  • Swelling, especially in the ankles, feet and calves.
  • Heaviness or tightness in the legs.
  • Pitting edema (when pressure is applied to the swollen area, a pit or indentation remains).
  • Pain or discomfort.
  • Skin changes, such as darkening or thickening.
  • Difficulty walking or standing for prolonged periods.

Risk Factors

  • Age. Older adults are more prone to venous insufficiency and other health conditions that cause edema.
  • Obesity. Excess weight can put pressure on the veins and contribute to poor circulation.
  • Sedentary lifestyle. Lack of movement or prolonged periods of sitting or standing can impair circulation and lead to fluid buildup.
  • Pregnancy. Hormonal changes and the pressure of the uterus can affect blood flow in the lower limbs.
  • Medical history. Conditions like diabetes, hypertension and vascular disease increase the risk of developing edema.

Maintaining lower limb health requires a combination of proper care, exercise, attention to footwear and healthy lifestyle habits.

We are independent prescribers able to prescribe any medication from the BNF relevant to the lower limb, foot and ankle.
