How to Survive Standing for Long Periods of Time
New Year’s Eve can be one of the most exciting nights of the year. It can be a very busy night for people’s feet with lots of work and possibly lots of standing still looking at parades or outside events.
Wearing the right footwear is so important – footwear that offers good arch support, cushioning and a proper fit.
Standing still for long periods of time can introduce many aches and pains especially as we try to shift our way from side to side.
Stretching calves and hamstrings as well as using a soft bolt to run under the soles of the feet along the plantar fascia can all help.
Rotating the ankles clockwise and counterclockwise is good in order to keep the blood flowing and reduce stiffness.
Making sure we have a good heel count for shoe, keeping the shoe laces tied up properly and using dual-lined socks are also great for our feet.
Other tips when standing for too long with your feet:
- Shift your weight between legs to reduce strain on one side of your body.
- If possible, take small breaks by walking around the event space or sitting down for a few minutes.
- Keep your back straight and your shoulders relaxed. Try not to lock your knees, as this can cause strain on your lower body.
- For those prone to blisters or foot soreness, padded heel inserts or arch supports can work wonders.
- Stretching your legs and feet after a night of standing can prevent soreness and improve circulation. A gentle foot massage or rolling your feet over a golf ball can also help alleviate any tension.
