What is Kaposi’s Sarcoma?
Kaposi sarcoma is a cancer type that affects the lining of the lymphatic vessels and blood. It can be the reason of reddish patches that may be noticeable on the skin. In some cases, cancers start in one place, then spread to other parts of the body. However, Kaposi sarcoma can also begin in more than one place simultaneously. The main cause is the human herpes virus-8 (HHV-8), although not everyone with HHV-8 will develop Kaposi sarcoma. Kaposi sarcoma mostly develop in individuals who have HHV-8 and those who have weak immune systems.
What are the symptoms of Kaposi sarcoma?
The main indication of Kaposi’s sarcoma is reddish-purple, reddish-brown or pink spots (lesions) on the skin. They are commonly on the face or legs, but can develop inside the body as well. There may be just one, or several in different parts of the body. At times they are somewhat raised nevertheless they may be flat. They can sometimes bleed.
The lesions can be the reason of other signs, as it depends where they are in the body.
Symptoms can include:
- abdominal pain, nausea or diarrhea (if lesions are visible in the digestive tract)
- a cough and breathlessness (if lesions are found in the lungs)
- swollen arms and legs or swollen glands (if there are lesions in the lymph nodes)
- feeling very tired
People usually have one or more lesions on the legs, ankles, or the soles of their feet. This type is called Classic (Mediterranean) Kaposi sarcoma. Classic KS is more common in men than in women.
