Do you think it’s a fungal infection? It may not be!
When it comes to foot problems like itching, redness, peeling skin — many people quickly assume one thing: it is a fungal infection. And while that’s often true, it’s not always the case. It can also be a condition called Erythrasma, a superficial bacterial skin infection.
Let’s compare what are the differences of foot fungal infection and bacterial infection.
A foot fungal infection, commonly known as athlete’s foot, is caused by fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments. These organisms love sweaty shoes, damp socks and humid conditions making your feet the perfect target.
Erythrasm is caused by a bacterium called Corynebacterium minutissimum. It affects the outer layers of the skin, especially in warm, moist areas.
Erythrasma commonly develops in skin folds such as armpits, and between the toes which is often mistaken for athlete’s foot.
Common symptoms of Erythrasma
-
Brownish, reddish, or slightly pink patches
-
Mild scaling (flaky skin)
-
Well-defined edges
-
Usually not very itchy (or only mildly itchy)
-
May have a slight odor
Who is at risk

People in hot, humid climates (like the Philippines)
-
Those who sweat a lot
-
Individuals with diabetes or obesity
-

Assessment and Diagnosis
Doctors may use a Wood’s lamp (a special UV light), where the patches glow a coral-red color, which is a key sign.
Treatment
Erythrasma is usually easy to treat:
-
Topical antibiotics
-
Oral antibiotics (in more widespread cases)
-
Antibacterial soaps
