Eggs, Biotin Rich Diet & Better Foot Health – Happy Easter!

Healthy nails aren’t just about appearance — they play a crucial role in overall foot health.  Improper nail care can lead to painful problems like ingrown toenails, infections and discomfort when walking.  The good news?  A few simple techniques can make all the difference.

But first, why is biotin beneficial to our skin, nails and hair.

Why Is Biotin Important for Nails, Skin and Hair Health?

Biotin is a B-vitamin that helps your body convert food into energy — but more importantly, it supports the production of keratin.

Biotin helps strengthen the body’s keratin structure, which is why it’s often associated with:

  • Stronger nails

  • Healthier hair

  • More resilient skin

Low levels of biotin have been linked to thin or brittle nails that split or break easily.
With adequate biotin:
  • Nails may become thicker
  • Less prone to cracking
  • Grow more consistently

Here are top five (5) nail cutting techniques we recommend

1. Cut your nails straight across and do not cut down the edges.  Avoid cutting too deep into the corners.

2. Never cut the cuticles so as not to introduce infections such as Paronychia.

3. Allow all of your nails to be at least 2mm longer even if you are a regular runner.

4. Avoid using harsh chemicals and try to use alcohol free products.  Use a hydrating nail oil even once a week – almond oil also works!

5. Eating biotin-rich foods and drinking 2L of water daily will keep your nails naturally healthy.

Biotin is essential for cell regeneration, which is important for tissues that grow quickly — like hair and nails.

Important Note

Biotin deficiencies are relatively rare, but when they occur, symptoms often show up in the hair, skin and nails first.

Most people can get enough biotin through foods like:

  • Eggs

  • Nuts and seeds

  • Whole grains

  • Bananas

Proper nail care is also important – it is a simple habit that can prevent bigger foot and nail problems down the line.

We are also independent prescribers able to prescribe any medication from the BNF relevant to the lower limb, foot and ankle.
