Foot Conditions affecting Children
There are a variety of foot conditions that a child can have ranging from structural issues to skin problems.
One of them is ‘Juvenile plantar dermatosis’. It is a skin condition that primarily affects the soles of the feet in children, typically between the ages of 3 and 12. It is characterized by dry, scaly, and sometimes cracked skin. The condition is often linked to excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and can lead to discomfort or pain.
Most children outgrow the condition as they reach adolescence.
Other Foot Conditions affecting Children are but not limited to:
- Sever’s disease. This is also known as calcaneal apophysitis. It is a common foot condition in children, particularly among those who are active or participate in sports. It occurs when the growth plate (apophysis) at the back of the heel becomes inflamed due to repetitive stress or strain.
- Tarsal coalition. It is a condition characterized by an abnormal connection between two or more bones in the tarsal region of the foot, which can restrict movement and lead to pain. This condition is often present from birth (congenital) but may not become symptomatic until later in childhood or adolescence.
- Verrucas. They are common skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus can spread through direct contact or indirectly via surfaces like swimming pool decks, locker rooms, or shared shoes. They typically appear on the soles of the feet and are particularly common in children and adolescents.
- Curly toes. It is a condition where one or more of the toes (usually the fourth or fifth toe) curl under or bend inwards towards the sole of the foot. A family history of curly toes may increase the likelihood of developing the condition. Tight or ill-fitting shoes can contribute to the deformity.
