How to Keep your Feet Spook Free

To keep your feet spook-free (aka soft, smooth, and healthy — not crusty like a Halloween monster 👻🦶), you’ll want to focus on preventing hard skin buildup and maintaining overall foot hygiene.

Why Does Hard Skin Build Up?

Hard skin (calluses) typically forms because of:

  • Friction or pressure (e.g., tight shoes, walking barefoot)

  • Dry skin

  • Lack of regular exfoliation or moisturization

What should we be doing to avoid hard skin build up?  Here are some of the tips we recommend:

(1) Try to use an emollient a minimum of twice a week (ideally once a day).

(2) Dual lined socks and a supportive rear foot shoe such as a high-top trainer.

(3) When removing hard skin, ensure that the feet have been showered or soaked first using a pumice stone to address any areas of hard skin – this way we can carefully ensure that we do not over file which can cause more inflammation whereby more callous gets replaced in response to trying to address inflammation.

(4) Avoid walking around the house barefoot – as much as we can to keep any cross contaminants from the carpet back to the soles of your feet.

There are pathological conditions of excess hard skin build-up such as Keratoderma Climactericum.
