Hygiene Procedures at The Chelsea Clinic
When it comes to healthcare, hygiene isn’t just a priority—it’s a necessity. At The Chelsea Clinic, where professionals deal with foot health and often come into contact with broken skin, infections and nail disorders, rigorous hygiene standards are critical to ensure the safety of every patient.
Why Hygiene in Podiatry is So Important
Feet are particularly vulnerable to bacteria, fungi and viruses due to their enclosed environment (think shoes and socks) and many patients may already have conditions like:
- Athlete’s foot
- Nail fungal infections
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- Warts or open wounds
Without proper hygiene, these conditions can then easily spread—either from patient to patient or even to staff. That’s why infection control is deeply embedded in daily podiatric care of our clinic.
Standard Hygiene Procedures
1. Hand Hygiene
Handwashing is the first line of defense.
- Our podiatrist wash or sanitize hands before and after every patient interaction.
- Alcohol-based hand rubs are used unless hands are visibly soiled, in which case soap and water are required.
- Gloves are worn during all treatments and changed between tasks to prevent cross-contamination.
2. Instrument Sterilization
All instruments used on patients are treated as potential carriers of infection.
- Autoclaving (steam sterilization) is the gold standard.
- Instruments are:
- Pre-cleaned
- Ultrasonically cleaned to remove debris
- Sealed in sterile pouches
- Autoclaved and logged for sterilization records
- Single-use items (like nail files or blades) are disposed of immediately after use.
3. Surface Disinfection
Everything the patient touches is disinfected—every time.
- Treatment chairs, tables, trays as well as any reusable surfaces are cleaned with medical-grade disinfectants between each patient.
- High-touch areas like doorknobs, light switches and also payment terminals are cleaned as well.
4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Our podiatrists and staff use appropriate PPE to minimize risk:
- Gloves, masks and aprons or gowns during high-risk procedures
- Eye protection if there is any risk of splashing
- Proper disposal of all used PPE in designated clinical waste bins
5. Clean Clinic Environment
The entire clinic maintain a visibly clean, clutter-free environment, including:
- Regular deep cleaning of the floors, bathrooms as well as waiting areas
- Air ventilation systems that are serviced and cleaned
- Clearly labeled clinical and non-clinical zones
6. Sharps and Waste Disposal
Podiatry involves the use of sharp instruments like scalpels or needles.
- Sharps bins are used and replaced regularly
- Clinical waste (like dressings or gloves) is bagged, sealed and collected by certified medical waste companies
For Patients: How You Can Help
As a patient, you can also support hygiene practices by:
- Arriving with clean feet and socks
- Not attending if you feel unwell or have an active infection
- Informing the clinic if you have any contagious conditions
- Following aftercare instructions carefully
Thus, our clinic has a strong commitment to patient safety. Whether you’re coming in for a simple nail trim or a diabetic foot assessment, you deserve the peace of mind that you’re in a safe, clean and professional environment.
We are independent prescribers able to prescribe any medication from the BNF relevant to the lower limb, foot and ankle.
