Know Your Foot Smells: What They Mean and What to Do About Them
Foot odor isn’t exactly a dinner table conversation. But if your foot smells weird, it could be trying to tell you something important.
“Why Do My Feet Smell?”
Feet naturally sweat a lot. And when that moisture gets trapped in shoes and socks, it becomes a party for bacteria and fungi. The result? That odd smell you can’t quite ignore.
Common Foot Smells & What They Might Mean
- If our feet have cheesy smell, it is because of Brevibacteria — the same kind used to ripen cheese! Wash your feet daily, dry them well and wear clean, breathable socks.
- If they smell musty or moldy, it could be an athlete’s feet (a fungal infection ). Your feet may be itching, peeling skin, or there could be redness.
- If they smell sour or vinegary, the cause could be excessive sweat mixed with trapped bacteria. Antibacterial sprays and powder can help. Rotate your shoes and keep feet dry.
- If our feet have sweet or unusual smells, rarely, it may point to a medical issue like diabetes.
If it’s a new smell or paired with other symptoms, contact a podiatrist right away.
