Malalignment of the Great Toenail
Malalignment of the great toenail (also known as hallux malalignment) refers to a condition where the big toe (hallux) or its toenail does not align properly with the rest of the toes. This misalignment can occur for various reasons and might result in discomfort, cosmetic concerns and even functional problems.
Causes of Malalignment of the Great Toenail
- Trauma or Injury – A past injury, such as stubbing the toe or dropping something heavy on it, can cause the toenail to grow in an abnormal direction.
- Genetic Factors – Some people may inherit a predisposition to nail or toe alignment issues, where their nails may naturally grow at an angle or with irregular shapes.
- Nail Conditions
- Ingrown Toenails: An ingrown toenail can push against the skin and cause pain and misalignment.
- Fungal Infections: These can distort the shape of the nail and lead to malalignment.
- Foot Structure – Structural issues such as flat feet, bunions or hammertoes can contribute to the misalignment of the great toenail.
- Tight Footwear – Wearing shoes that are too tight, narrow or high-heeled can put pressure on the toes and contribute to malalignment over time.
- Arthritis – Conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can affect the joints in the foot, causing deformities and affecting nail growth and alignment.
Symptoms of Malalignment of the Great Toenail
- Pain and Discomfort. You may experience pain or tenderness in the great toe or around the nail.
- Cosmetic Concerns. The nail may appear misaligned, ingrown or unusually shaped.
- Difficulty with Footwear. Tight or uncomfortable shoes may worsen the alignment issue.
- Infection Risk. If the nail is severely misaligned, there’s a higher risk for fungal infections or ingrown toenails.
