Everything You Need to Know About Spider Veins
If you’ve ever noticed thin red, blue or purple lines weaving across your legs like little road maps — you’re not alone. These tiny veins are known as spider veins and while they’re typically harmless, they can be a cosmetic nuisance for many people.
But don’t worry — spider veins are both common and treatable. Let’s take a closer look at what causes them, and how to we can prevent them.
What Are Spider Veins?
Spider veins (medically known as telangiectasias) are small, dilated blood vessels that appear close to the skin’s surface. They often resemble a spider web or tree branch — hence the name. Most commonly found on the legs, thighs, ankles and face, they’re more of a cosmetic issue than a serious medical condition.
What Causes Spider Veins?
A mix of genetics, hormones and lifestyle choices can contribute to spider veins. Here are some of the most common culprits:
- Genetics – If your parents had them, you’re more likely to get them too.
- Hormonal changes – Pregnancy, menopause and birth control can all play a role.
- Prolonged standing or sitting – Common in jobs like nursing, teaching or office work.
- Sun exposure – Especially when it comes to facial spider veins.
- Aging – Vein walls and valves naturally weaken over time.
- Obesity – Extra weight increases pressure on the veins.
Prevention Tips
While you can’t completely prevent spider veins (especially if you have a family history), you can lower your risk and slow their progression:
- Wear compression stockings if you’re on your feet a lot.
- Move frequently — avoid sitting or standing still for too long.
- Elevate your legs when resting.
- Use sunscreen to protect feet and ankle blood vessels.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Stay active — walking, swimming and cycling are great for circulation.
