Suffering from Heel Pain? Here’s What You Need to Know
(One minute read).
Heel pain is one of the most common foot problems that affects people of all ages—from athletes and active walkers to those who spend long hours standing. If you wake up with a stabbing pain in your heel or feel discomfort after a long day, you’re not alone.
Common Causes of Heel Pain
- Plantar Fasciitis
Inflammation of the thick band of tissue (plantar fascia) that runs across the bottom of the foot. Typically causes sharp pain in the heel with the first steps of the day. - Heel Spurs
Bony growths that develop on the underside of the heel bone, often due to chronic stress and strain. - Achilles Tendinitis
Inflammation of the Achilles tendon at the back of the heel, common in runners and active individuals. - Bursitis
Irritation or inflammation of fluid-filled sacs (bursae) in the heel, causing swelling and tenderness. - Stress Fractures
Small cracks in the heel bone, usually from overuse or repetitive impact. - Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
Nerve entrapment causing burning, tingling or shooting pain in the heel or arch.
When to See a Specialist
You should consult a podiatrist if you:
- Have pain that lasts more than a few days
- Experience swelling or bruising
- Have difficulty walking or standing
- Notice worsening pain with activity
Early intervention leads to faster recovery and prevents long-term damage.
Diagnosis
A podiatrist will assess your symptoms, perform a physical exam and may recommend:
- X-rays to check for bone issues
- Ultrasound to examine soft tissues in real time
- MRI in complex or unresolved cases
