Why Is My Toe Swollen Like a Sausage?
Sausage toe is a colloquial term used to describe a swollen, red and painful toe that resembles a sausage in appearance. It’s most commonly associated with dactylitis, which is inflammation of an entire digit (toe or finger).
The swelling typically involves the entire digit, not just the joints. The entire finger or toe (the whole digit) will be swollen along its whole length.
Arthritis and other autoimmune diseases are the most common causes of dactylitis.
Common Causes
1. Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA)
- Most common systemic cause of sausage toes
- Autoimmune disease that affects skin (psoriasis) and joints
- Dactylitis is a hallmark symptom—often asymmetrical
2. Reactive Arthritis
- Autoimmune response following infection (often gastrointestinal or genitourinary)
- Dactylitis can occur as part of the triad (arthritis, urethritis, conjunctivitis)
3. Other Spondyloarthropathies
- Including ankylosing spondylitis and enteropathic arthritis (linked with IBD)
- May present with dactylitis as part of a broader inflammatory picture
4. Gout
- May mimic dactylitis in the acute phase, especially if it involves a toe (often the big toe)
- Caused by uric acid crystal deposition
5. Infection
- Some infections that can make your digits swell up include lyme disease, syphilis or blistering distal dactylitis.
- Cellulitis or osteomyelitis (bone infection) can also cause significant swelling
- Often accompanied by fever and localized warmth
6. Sickle Cell Disease
- Dactylitis (especially in children) can be an early sign of a sickle cell crisis
Infections causing dactylitis are the rarest forms.
