Your toothbrush is your ankle’s secret coach…
Since it’s the 11th of January, I’m guessing you’ve already been bombarded with “New Year, New You” gym plans. But today, we’re keeping it much simpler. We’re going to support your balance while you’re still in your pyjamas.
The Secret? The Toothbrush Balance Challenge
Most of us neglect our proprioception — which is basically your brain’s internal GPS for where your feet are in space. When this gets a little “sleepy,” we’re more prone to wobbles, trips and stiff ankles.
The 1-Minute Fix: Tonight, while you brush your teeth, stand on one leg.
- 0:00 – 0:60: Left leg (keep a slight bend in the knee).
- 1:00 – 2:00: Right leg.
- Bonus points: Close your eyes for the last 10 seconds if you’re feeling brave (keep a hand near the sink just in case!).
By doing this twice a day, you’re training the tiny stabilizer muscles around your ankle to stay sharp and reactive. It’s the ultimate “micro-habit” for rock-solid ankles.
Give it a go tonight — just try not to get toothpaste on the mirror!
We are independent prescribers able to prescribe any medication from the BNF relevant to the lower limb, foot and ankle.
